I used to go to a typical gym and I loved it…but I’ll never go regularly again. This is my unapologetically biased opinion on how much more effective 60 minutes in a coach-led group class can be versus 60 minutes at a Snap Fitness or local garage gym.
When it comes to fitness, the choice between working out alone and attending a structured class with a certified coach has a significant impact on motivation, consistency, and results. While solo workouts—especially those based on available equipment—offer flexibility and convenience, they often lack the structure and guidance many people need to stay accountable and train safely.
Sure, working out alone allows for a custom pace and routine. You can adjust your workout on the fly based on what equipment is free or how you’re feeling that day, but that can be part of the problem too. That freedom to adjust the plan when things get tough might be why you’re not getting the results you thought you’d get when you signed up for your gym membership at the new year. For experienced gym-goers with a strong knowledge of programming and movement, a regular gym membership can be effective (that was me for many years). However for many others, this approach can lead to missed opportunities for progression, a lack of variety, or even injury due to poor form or imbalanced training.
In contrast, a structured group class led by a certified coach provides a clear plan, real-time instruction, and built-in community support. These elements are particularly beneficial for people who may feel overwhelmed by designing their own workouts or unsure about proper form. I can say through experience, getting great workouts in is awesome; getting hurt in the process is not. Coaches not only explain the workout but ensure it’s modified for all levels, reducing risk and increasing confidence. Classes also push participants to challenge themselves in ways they may not when working out alone. As a former athlete, this was the biggest game changer for me. Motivation comes and goes but it makes it a lot easier to push yourself when the guy or gal next to you has the body you want and just completed the workout 10 minutes faster than you. You train with those that will push you to be better. No one cares how you’re doing at an open gym.
So ultimately, both approaches can be effective depending on the individual. But for those who thrive with guidance, want to move safely, and enjoy the energy of a shared workout experience, classes offer unmatched support and structure. This is why many gyms, like Everhard Fitness, offer hybrid memberships that combine 24-hour gym access with unlimited group classes—giving members the best of both worlds. I am not saying you losing 30 lbs by going to a typical gym is going about it the wrong way, that is awesome, but I am simply proclaiming the drastic difference I experienced when I switched to group classes and I honestly wish I found them earlier.
