When it comes to youth fitness, developing proper movement patterns early in life pays off in big ways—both immediately and in the long term. Speed and agility training not only helps kids become faster and more coordinated but also builds confidence, improves overall athletic performance, and reduces injury risk.

At Everhard Fitness, we recognize how important it is for young athletes and active kids to learn these foundational skills the right way. That’s why we’re excited to offer our Kids Fit program from July 1st to July 31st, meeting every Tuesday and Thursday. There will be two separate courses, one starting at 11:15am, lasting 30 min, and designed for kids ages 4-7. The other course will begin at 11:45am, lasting 45 min, and programmed for ages 8-12.

The program is designed to give your child all of these benefits in a safe, fun, and encouraging environment. These coach-led classes will build strength, agility, and offer teaching cues for lifelong fitness habits. Whether your child is new to exercise or already plays a sport, this program is the perfect way to keep them active this summer.

Immediate Benefits of Speed and Agility Training

Speed and agility drills challenge a child’s balance, coordination, and neuromuscular control. These quick, multi-directional movements help improve reaction time and body awareness. Whether your child plays sports or simply wants to feel more confident moving their body, these drills make a noticeable difference fast. Kids often experience better focus, more energy, and an increased interest in physical activity—great news for parents trying to limit screen time and encourage healthy habits.

Long-Term Athletic Development

Training speed and agility early sets the stage for long-term success. It helps develop the fast-twitch muscle fibers that are essential for explosive movement—useful not only in sports like soccer, basketball, and football, but also in maintaining healthy movement patterns throughout life. Additionally, improving agility helps reduce the likelihood of future injuries, especially in the knees and ankles, by teaching proper mechanics and control under stress.

The Importance of Learning to Lift Properly

Many parents wonder when it’s appropriate for kids to begin lifting weights. The answer: with the right guidance, sooner than you might think. Learning how to lift properly isn’t about maxing out on the bench press—it’s about body control, posture, and safe mechanics. Youth who are coached correctly can safely perform functional strength movements that support their everyday activities and athletic goals. Typically younger age groups will have a focus on moving their bodies correctly using their own bodyweight first, then gradually introduce resistance. Older age groups oftentimes follow a similar approach, but at a slightly advanced starting point with room to build towards moderate dumbbell, kettlebell, and barbell work. This builds a foundation of strength that protects their joints and prepares them for higher levels of activity in their teen years and beyond. And a good youth program will provide a balance that prioritizes safety, and allows space for fun.

Physical and Mental Growth

One of the most important outcomes of strength, speed, and agility training is mental resilience. Kids gain a sense of accomplishment from learning a new skill or hitting a new personal best. They begin to understand the value of hard work and discipline. They learn how to listen, follow direction, and over time this creates a mindset of confidence that transfers into other areas of life—school, friendships, and future goals.
