There are no officially licensed Hyrox gyms or classes in North Canton, Ohio. The closest facility with affiliation would be CrossFit HighGear in Medina, Ohio; however, Everhard Fitness has expanded programming with a Hyrox style track in mind. Everhard Fitness is not officially licensed, making the new endurance cross training program available at a low cost.
So what does it entail? Hyrox typically emphasizes long runs, interval training, strength endurance, and “compromised running”—simulating fatigue by alternating running and functional work, just like the event stations. To train for this, one would want to spend time focusing on specific pieces of the race along with a combination of running and station work. Examples of this are strictly running intervals, carrying out timed workouts that include Wall Balls, Burpees, Rowing, and some of the other stations seen at Hyrox races, and a healthy mix of workouts that combine the running and the stationary work to simulate the experience of a race.
Why is Hyrox Becoming so Popular?
The repeated standards to every race, and the exclusion of gymnastics and barbell movements has attracted a large segment of athletes. Unlike cross training where workouts are constantly varied specifically to promote the ability to adapt and expand your capabilities as an individual, your progress in the sport of Hyrox can be easily measured due to every race being the same distances, weights, and number of reps.
With eight 1 KM runs throughout a full race it goes without saying that these races are heavy on the running. So for those that enjoy 5K’s, 10K’s, or even dabble in marathon running, the addition of the stationed movements between the runs creates an exciting switch up to working out!
